This rule was taught to me by Sr Mary Perpetua when I was in the 3rd class
“You can be similar to, different from, or greater or lesser than and never the three shall mix”.
I’m popping this here because I read a letter to the editor of the SMH . The writer was requesting that in the new year (2103) people being published in the paper cease using annoying, repetitive and grammatically incorrect phrases.
Just for starters there was his/her hit-list of words that really annoy
– ubiquitous and execrable
I don’t read the Sydney Morning Herald often enough to know if those words are over used.
But what grabbed my attention was the …..
“and, to a lesser extent, ‘different than’ instead of the correct ‘different to'”
